Jolie Matkowski

Jolie Matkowski – Property Standards Director

Candidate for Reelection

I have served on the Board as Property Standards Director since July 2023 and am seeking reelection for another term. It has been an honor and privilege to serve the community, and if elected by the membership, I look forward to continuing to help protect and preserve the beauty, safety, and character of the Rim.

My husband Jason and I have owned property in the Rim since 2015 and have been fortunate to live here full time for the past several years. We love skiing, trail running, hiking, and mountain biking throughout the North Cascades and deeply value the unique character of MBRCC.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

Rachel Vasak

Having been a part of the Glacier community for over three decades and an MBR homeowner for ten years this month, I am eager for the opportunity to transition my professional governance experience into service for our immediate neighborhood. I have deep appreciation and respect for all of the current board members. While I am personally at a point where I am ready to take a shift by offering service to our community, I am happy to wait if there is not an opening at this point.  Out of the two positions that are up for renewal, I would like to apply for the secretarial position simply because I am confident that I have the necessary skills for that role, and I would want more time to learn before I would be comfortable taking on the property standards responsibilities.

Community Connection & History

My roots in Glacier run deep. I lived here full-time from 1990 to 1999 and have maintained part-time residency ever since. For the past decade, my husband, my brother, his wife, and I have co-owned our dream cabin within the Rim. We personally spend as much time as we can here, and when we know we cannot be here, we offer our home to a few select vacation renters. Beyond living and recreating in the area, I have worked and volunteered in the Glacier area since 1991. I have worked at the Chandelier, Milanoes, Innisfree, Grahams Store, Department of Transportation and the US Forest Service. I have been a staff member or an employee at Mt. Baker Ski Area since 2000, serving as the Mountain Education Center Director and leading avalanche education programs in that capacity. My commitment to this area is both personal and professional; I have studied the relevant MBR governing documents and have long considered how I might best contribute to our community’s continued success.

Professional Leadership & Board Experience

I have spent my career in the nonprofit sector, serving as an Executive Director since 2008 (NSEA 2008-2024, Whatcom land Trust 2024-current). My academic background—an undergraduate degree in geology (specifically fluvial geomorphology) and MPA in Nonprofit Leadership—provided me with a specialized focus on nonprofit leadership, policy work, succession planning, strategic planning, and change management. I believe these skills are particularly relevant to the evolving needs of an HOA or a community board. I believe the most important thing I could do as a board member is not to represent my personal interests, but to understand the community's needs and to help find common ground between differing perspectives and represent the community.

In addition to my professional work, I make it a priority to remain active in board governance. I currently serve on the governing board for WECU and have previously held every officer role across various boards (Washington Regional Fisheries Coalition, Sustainable Connections, Sound Salmon Solutions and Meadows Montessori School and was a founding board member with the Whatcom Prep baseball club). I have also worked as a nonprofit consultant to help organizations with strategic planning, succession planning, board restructuring, and change management. These experiences have given me a clear understanding of the Secretary’s vital role in maintaining accurate records, upholding policies, ensuring transparency, and supporting effective communication between the board and our community members.

Capacity and Commitment

While my professional life is active, I am fortunate to have a high degree of flexibility. More importantly, my personal capacity is about to shift significantly as our son graduates from high school in one week. I have intentionally waited for a time when I knew I could give this role the dedication and "tangible time" it deserves. I am confident that I have both the capability and the availability to serve the MBR community effectively.
