IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING MBR FRONT GATE

Dear MBR Member,

TL/DNR*

The current MBR entrance gate has reached the end of its useful life and work to replace it is beginning at 7AM on Monday, Jan-13th.  Due to a new weather forecast expecting below normal temps in two weeks and the need to pour concrete, the start date for this work has been moved up.   As I mentioned at the last Annual General Meeting, key cards are being cloned, many are lost and not reported, and replacement system parts and programming are limited.   The new system being installed will also control access to the Clubhouse, Pool, and Garbage Area.  The new system will provide more information and make the Rim more secure by providing live and synced video capture, license plate evidence of who is entering, along with the ability to revoke errant credentials.  The change will require the issuance of new entry credentials as all old proximity credentials (Gate Cards) will cease to work when the new system is activated.  Credentials are not being replaced this coming week; this work will happen once all the hardware and software is installed.

I will provide more information, including the types of credentials available and how they will be made available to members as we approach the date the system becomes operational ~ in approx. three to five weeks.

BE AWARE THAT FROM 7AM MONDAY JAN-13TH TO MONDAY JANUARY 20TH (INCLUSIVE) THE MBR FRONT GATE ON SR 542 WILL BE BLOCKED TO ALL USE 24 HOURS PER DAY.

YOU MUST UTILIZE THE MBR FIRE GATE ON PINNACLE ROAD & GLACIER CREEK ROAD (FS ROAD #39) to enter or exit MBR.

Glacier Creek Road (FS Road #39) turns south from Mt Baker Highway (542) ¼ of a mile east of MBR, just past the trail to the Glacier Cemetery.

[Ignore the blue traces on the map, below.  The red trace and the stars outline the exit.]

THE DETAILS

The Front Gate work is related to the larger project to replace and update the MBRCC Security & Access Control Systems.  This project is necessary because the existing security and access hardware and software are failing due to being past end-of-life.  In addition, the existing system presents an increased security risk due to people actively gaming it.  Installation of the legacy system began in 1992.   At that time, the system was state-of-the-art and cost us $93K in current dollars.

The new SAC system will control access using non-cloneable and revokable security smartcards and mobile tokens that reside on smart phones.  The mobile tokens are distributed over the internet and will not require anyone to physically visit MBR.   The mobile setup makes use of an App and near field communication and Bluetooth.

The project consists of several components:

  1. Demoing the existing Front Gate base, controls, and cameras, in addition to installing bollards to protect the new equipment;

  2. Installing new, high-definition cameras that can read license plates at the Front Gate;

  3. replacing the cameras in the Garbage Area, Clubhouse Parking Area, and Clubhouse interior;

  4. installing cameras on the pool deck and surrounding area;

  5. installing an access gate and controls on the Garbage Area; and

  6. replacing the existing recording and access control systems with a single, unified system that is cloud based.

Next Steps:

  • The Front Gate area will need to be rebuilt, and during this stage, it will be closed to allow for this work (see, above).

  • After the Front Gate is rebuilt, we will subsequently need to enroll new credentials for each member as the existing credentials will cease to function.   More on this will follow shortly in a follow-up email that will outline the process and what will be expected of members to support this project.

  • People employing vendors and contractors will need to follow the instructions for vendors and contractors that will be outlined in the follow-up email.

  • MBR will contact UPS, FedEx, GLS, Whatcom Fire Department, Whatcom Sheriff Department to ensure they continue to have access to MBR.

  • A follow-up email outlining the schedule and next steps will be posted shortly.

  • For folks who rent out their homes long-term, please follow the instructions in the follow-up email.

  • For members who rent their property on a short-term basis, detailed instructions describing the new processes will be in the follow-up email.   The new process will follow existing MBR rules, and it is likely that the distribution of credentials to all renters will take place over the internet, which will remove the friction of having to distribute and retrieve physical credentials to/from each separate rental.

Please stay tuned.

Thanks,

David
